Sleep Deprivation

we’ve lost a person at work, so everyone is pulling extra hours to take up the slack. Add to that the fact that my husband accidentally made me two huge cups of regular coffee (I’m a decaf gal in the evenings), and what do you get?

At 3:00 last night, I was positively vibrating. I won’t be doing much blogging tonight, but I’ll catch up with this just as soon as I catch up on my sleep! I also want to talk a bit about the possibility of doing an online magazine.

Family Stories

I was going through some photos the other day on the camera and ran across these.

Tazewell

My husband and I went last year to visit my aunt, not long before she passed away. We took this from the top of the mountain. He had pulled the car as far into the weeds as we could so I could get the photo. I like how the sun is still shining on the tops of the mountains even though the valleys have started to darken. Both my parents’ families are from this area, so there are a lot of family stories surrounding the area. These are alwasy good fodder for story ideas.

Down the road

I love this photo. Doesn’t it look like the road to just about anywhere?

Neighbors

My aunt lived just down the road from here. Yes, I believe one or two of these houses is still occupied. When I was a girl, I used to spend the day with my aunt when we came in to visit. One of her neighbors lived in one of these little shacks, and she used to come to my aunt’s to shower every day or so. Yep, you guessed it. No indoor plumbing.

Hard to believe, isn’t it? There are some places even in the US that still don’t have indoor plumbing. I’d bet some of these houses still don’t have it. I’m going to go make some coffee and think about how lucky I am!

Blog Update

Note that I added my Google Reader shared items to the sidebar. I love how easy it is to do this. If you haven’t had a chance to try Google Reader, you really should. It’s a terrific way to keep up on your blogs.

Updates

Wow, it’s amazing how optimistic I can be.

I thought that I’d be able to get right back on schedule. Yeah, right. I’m winning the lottery and getting elected President too.

My mom is still not quite well, but certainly better than she was. I’ve missed more work in the last month or so than I care to think about; thank goodness I had lots and lots of vacation time to use. My boss is really good about those things too, so I’m lucky there as well.

The house is an absolute disaster, despite my husband’s attempts to help me keep up with things. Things are slowly getting better, but it’ll take a while. When you’re exhausted, sleep-deprived, and stressed, something has to give. Housework is one of those “somethings.”

Unfortunately blogging and writing have also taken a back seat, and that’s been a source of stress as well. I’m TRYING to edit the novel, but things are going at a crawl.

To add to the difficulty, I’ve been dealing with a difficult coworker. When I get home, I desperately need to de-stress before I can think or do anything. How do I do that? Knitting! I thought you might enjoy seeing a couple of the things I’ve been doing.

This sock picture is horrible, but I took it with my camera phone, at night, so what do you expect. It does give you a good idea of the size of the sock. Note the laptop in the background (and no, it’s not one of the new, ultra-small laptops). I’m just now working the toe decreases, so the sock is still not quite complete.

Knit Sock in Progress
No, my feet are not that big. (Okay, they’re big, but not THAT big.) These are for my husband, Mr. Size 13-wide. I think I have as many stitches in this sock as a sweater would have. Can you tell I’ve been working off a lot of stress?

We did manage to get out last weekend, for the first time in a few weeks. We’ve gotten a lot of snow, and here’s a couple pictures of the snow melt. These were also taken with my camera phone, so they’re not great. I never seem to have the “real” camera with me.

And, to wind up, I give you a picture of my wildflowers from last spring. I can’t wait till it warms up!

Flu

Ugh…

I’ve got a stomach bug, and bad bad things have been happening. ‘Nuff said.

I’m looking at some writing software, so expect some reviews soon, as soon as I’m feeling a bit better.

Quick Blog Update

Wow, the last two weeks have been absolutely crazy, hence no blog posts.

  • My mom came down with a bad case of shingles and has been sick about two weeks now. As luck would have it, I haven’t had chicken pox, so it’s possible for me to catch them from her. I took the vaccine, and I’m keeping my fingers crossed! If you don’t know what shingles are, it’s chicken pox, revisited. Very painful blisters erupt on the body, and stick around for at least a week or two.
  • I’ve dropped Blogitive from the blog. It’s just not what I want to do here, so you won’t be seeing any more of their ads. If you don’t mind putting ads on your blog, they’re not a bad deal though.
  • I haven’t touched the novel in two weeks, but I am looking at some outlining software. When I’ve figured out what I want, I’ll write up a review here.
  • To top it off, we got blasted by that incredible cold spell, and found out the hard way that our laundry room pipes aren’t insulated, AT ALL. We were lucky that they didn’t  freeze entirely.
  • That’s about it, for now. I’m still trying to get caught up on some much-needed sleep, but I didn’t want everyone to think I’d disappeared either. I’ll post something else tomorrow.

Some Cool Links…

I spent some time (and money!) in the bookstore this weekend, so it was a pretty good weekend, and pretty normal too. I think I might collapse in a heap of withdrawal pain if I went to a bookstore and didn’t buy anything. This weekend, it was Pride and Prejudice, perhaps my favorite novel of all time. If you’ve never read it, you really should, and DON’T think the movie is any sort of substitute. It’s hilarious.

As for other things that are keeping me busy, here’s a handful of links I’ve been following, and though all aren’t writing related, they’re pretty cool anyway.

I enjoy knitting and crocheting in my "spare" time. (Yeah, yeah, what’s that?!) If you’re interested in either, or thinking of learning, check these out.

  1. Yarn Harlot. Very funny and generally cool. I have her book "Knitting Rules," and I was able to follow the sock pattern in it with only a couple rip-outs. Considering that I’m still a beginner, that’s pretty amazing. The socks turned out really cute too. See my sidebar link if you want a closer look at her books.
  2. Knitty is an online knitting magazine, and the new issue just came out. There are always a few patterns that I’d like to try out.
  3. Paperback Writer. Okay, a writing one. I really enjoy the blog, and she posts LOTS of useful links. It’s definitely worth taking some time and browsing the archives.
  4. Self Publishing Blog. I just ran across this one, but it looks interesting. (Sigh.) Yet another thing to distract me from actually writing.

Plays, plays and more plays!

If you enjoy going to the theater, then check out the Contemporary American Theater Festival.

We live in the general area, so we’ll probably make it out to at least one of the plays this year. The plays are put on at Shepherd University  in Shepherdstown, West Virginia. It’s a beautiful, quaint little historic town. If you have a few days, stay on one of the bed and breakfasts in the area and do some shopping as well. There are lots of unique shops where you can buy great gifts.

Remember, you’re close to D.C. so maybe you’d like to take in some museums and other sights in the city while you’re at it.
