What I learned this weekend

Saturday, May 26th, 2007

Ahem…

The observant among you no doubt noticed the downtime. I’m not sure how long it lasted, but as you see, I’m back. Hosting usually works better when you 1. Pay with a good credit card and 2. Receive your email at an address that actually works. My husband saved the day on this one (thanks, hon!!). He found an old phone number on our bank statement, of all places. It turned out to be one of the staff’s home number (bet she loves that), and she helped me take care of it.

I also learned something else rather interesting; it’s possible to get a significant traffic boost by adding the word “sex” to your title. That wasn’t my intention with the last post. I just thought it was a funny quote. My visits have jumped about 20 percent since then.

I don’t know about you, but I find that troubling. Someone out there in internet-land is searching for “sex on a bicycle”? I don’t even want to think about it.

I’m also making my first attempt at lace knitting. It’s a shawl for my aunt, and so far, so good. It’s a pattern from page 114 of Hats Gloves Scarves(a recent gift from my secret pal). It’s a 30 stitch repeat scarf, and the pattern gives a narrow and wide version. However, neither was quite enough for a shawl, so I added an extra repeat. Otherwise, I haven’t altered the pattern (unless you count mistakes!)

I’m using a yarn I got from Knitpicks, that’s 70 percent wool and 30 percent silk. It’s actually sock weight, but it’s knitting up beautifully!

And finally, I’ve learned that I may end up being a real TV junkie after all. I don’t watch much television, but we usually have it on for background noise. Silence bugs me, but that’s another story. My husband (he’s been really handy lately) set up MythTV for me. For those unfamiliar with it, it’s similar to Tivo, except that it’s Opensource and free. We had an older computer, and he installed Ubuntu there (Linux). Then MythTV. It took some setup and tweaking, but it’s working like a charm now.

Right now, I’m watching Planet of the Apes. Get your hands off me, you damn dirty ape! Okay, so I really like the movie. I’ll be taping The Tick later tonight. Spoon!!

Dead Mouse Hunt

Monday, March 26th, 2007

Just as I was getting back into the groove of editing, and finding some time to knit and relax…. It’s always something.

In this case, the something turns out to be a dead mouse. To complicate things, they’ve hidden in very, very well in our room somewhere. For the last couple evenings, we’ve been turning the room upside down, looking for it. You can imagine what it smells like…

Anyone want a couple cats?

Writing Notebook: Marines and Snow

Friday, January 19th, 2007

If you’re like me, you probably jot some notes down when you overhear something funny, interesting or striking. A lot ends up in my writing notebook for (possible) future use.

Today, I had a funny conversation. We’ve been getting little snow “teasers” but nothing serious. I love snow, so it’s driving me nuts. We got to talking about how in the South things more or less shut down when there’s snow since most people aren’t accustomed to driving in it.

Which brought up this…

Pete was telling us about his service in the Marines in South Carolina. In 2000 (or 2001) they got some snow and ice, which is unusual for the area, so the base called a snow day.

Yep, the MARINE CORPS called a snow day.

Maybe I have an odd sense of humor, but I think it’s hilarious.

Good reads and fun stuff

Tuesday, October 17th, 2006

Your Brains  I’m not a huge fan of You Tube in general, but this is funny. I do happen to be a big zombie fan, in case you were wondering.

Bubble Wrap Here’s a huge time waster. This person has too much time on his hands. Of course, considering how much time I spent popping it, so do I. POP POP POP

Spin to Knit Okay, spinning your own yarn is a little nuts, but it’s intriguing too. As a knitter, I have to admit that I’m attracted to the idea of creating my yarn EXACTLY as I want it. Tempting… I’ve been wondering what TJ’s fur would look like spun…. (TJ is our black and white rabbit). Angora, anyone?

Holly Lisle No, I haven’t read any of her work, but her tutorials and tips are pretty interesting. If you’re in the process of editing, I think you’ll find something useful here.

aka Writely This used to be Writely, but it’s now Google docs. Either way, it seems handy that your work would be available from any computer, but of course there’s the privacy concerns of storing it online. Google knows everything else about me, why not this too?

I’m still fighting off a really bad cold, so that’s the end of the old blog entry for tonight. Cold medicine, here I come.

Check out these comics on comics.com

Unfit

This one is only about a week old, and it’s quite funny. It’s about fitness instructors working with the "Unfit."

Pearls Before Swine

This one is a little dark, but still funny, if you enjoy a little dark humor.

Get Fuzzy

Link: Get Fuzzy.

Just a note and a quick recommendation.

I have a dog and cat, so I can really relate to a lot of the silliness in this comic strip. I highly recommend it!

Cube Dwellers Everywhere!

Tuesday, December 14th, 2004

I’m not sure how many of you work in a cube or similar environment. I do — take a moment to pity me, please.

I wanted to point out the Dilbert  website for those of  you who aren’t already frequent visitors. One of my favorite parts of the site is the Newsletter. As luck would have it, Scott Adams just published a new edition about a week ago, so take a minute to check it out. I promise it’s worth quite a few good laughs.

P.S. I love the "animal magnetism" blurb.
