I love romance and happen to be writing one among other things, but it gets my goat that they think it is fluffy stuff. I casually mention that Nora Roberts made 67 MILLION in 2006 alone. That usually gets their attention. It's the same in photography. People would snicker and asked if I'd ever done nudes. It ALWAYS shut them up when I said yes. Sheesh, you'd have thought I was talking about porn. That's so NOT me. Write on! Enjoy those odd remarks and quizzical looks. Oh, I sometimes get those digs about romance.
