Horror or Humor, Depends on how you look at it.
I read an article a few days ago about people in Turkey being required to vote, and I couldn’t help wonder about how that would work in the U.S.
Let’s pause to mull that over, shall we?
Mulling….
Hm… Let’s imagine that people in the U.S. are required to vote. I bet you can think of a dozen people, maybe more, right off the bat who shouldn’t be voting. Am I right? I’m not trying to be elitist; this has nothing to do with education or even whether you agree with me politically. I’m arguing that there are simply some people who don’t think enough to make even a remotely informed decision, and that these people ought not to be voting. You know someone like this — I know you do.
So… In the U.S., these people probably self-eliminate when it comes to casting their ballots.
But what if they didn’t? What if we suddenly threw in several hundred thousand people who know nothing about the issues, and who don’t want to know. They literally show up and vote for someone, or something. How would this change American politics? Would it? Do you think this is an interesting premise for the beginning of a novel?
